Online Poker Collusion Strategy
My previous column on Dirty Poker introduced you to a book about cheating in poker, and provided a rather thorough overview of the art of cheating. In this column, we’ll go into further detail regarding what the book describes, specifically with regard to collusion.
Collusion – The most common form of cheating
The most popular form of cheating is the “art” of collusion, where two or more players team up to cheat their opponents at the table. One way of executing this idea in live poker games is when a person uses chips – not one’s facial expressions or body language – to communicate with collusion partners to let them know when he holds a powerful starting hand. Here’s a good example of this technique in Texas hold’em:
- A chip placed on the upper left corner of one of his hole cards indicates pocket Aces;
- A chip on the top center of the card tells his buddies that he has pocket Kings.
- A chip on the upper right corner indicates pocket Queens.
- Likewise, a chip along the middle of one of his hole cards, from left to right, announces J-J, 10-10, and 9-9.
A similar system is used to inform partners when holding non-paired premium and other attractive starting hands, like A-K, A-Q, A-J, A-10, K-Q, K-J, and K-10. They’ll use two chips, one precisely atop the other, when the cards are suited, while slightly displacing the top chip from the bottom chip if the cards are off-suit.
Creating multiple accounts can be considered collusion in online poker. A player can enter into a poker tournament from multiple accounts and increase the chances of winning and cashing in on the big fat pot of an online tournament. This form of cheating is also pretty easy for online poker rooms to crack down, and they usually nip it in the bud.
- Since poker is a single player game collusion is considered cheating.1Colluding players try to cheat on fair players to get their money. Collusion is hard to detect on online poker platforms because the players can use other channels to communicate like telephones or Internet chat rooms.
- Introducing collusion, wherein a player tries to help or at least not hurt specific other players, tends to distort the essence of the game so much the result is often barely recognizable as poker.
As the hand progresses, when one partner makes a big hand, the others colluding at the table will know it and, accordingly, help build the pot. In all cases, the other partners will muck their hands before the showdown, thereby concealing the cheating underway.

Cheating in Home Games
I hate to say it, but virtually all forms of cheating can be executed in home games. Overwhelmingly, much like safe online casinos and poker rooms that have proper security, licensing, and audited payouts, home games are fun poker outlets for recreational players. Occasionally though, especially if the stakes are high, you’ll get a bad apple or two among the bunch. If you’re in a home game where you happen to notice any of the following types of collusion taking place, head home and don’t ever go back:
- “Marked cards” are easily created. Just look or feel the back of the card.
- “Stripped cards” are shaved on one side, so adjacent unshaved cards protrude ever so slightly, and can easily be drawn out of the deck.
- A “card mechanic” can use his fingers to slide back the top card in the deck and then deal out the next.
- “Palming chips” is a way to sneak chips out of the pot.
- “Anglers” play the angle, and may not actually cheat; they use opportunities to gain information to gain an edge over their opponents. (Note: Some might say that the Esther Bluff is a method of angling – to get into your opponent’s mind so as to influence his decision.)
- “Misdeclaring” a hand is a form of cheating that some players sometimes try to use. At showdown, the cheater incorrectly declares his hand as much higher than it actually is; and his opponent obliges by mucking his cards, putting his hand out of play – one that would have taken the pot. Of course, the victim would have been wise to wait to see his opponent’s hand before rendering his own hand out-of-play by tossing his hole cards into the muck.
- And, of course, there are unfortunately also other home game collusion scams in addition to the ones we’ve described above.
Moral of the Story
Keep your wits about you at all times whenever you play live poker, especially if you’re not playing in an established brick and mortar poker room. Be aware and be prepared!

First of all let us give a definition of Poker Collusion. The collusion in poker is first of all another form of cheating at a poker table. Cooperation of two players against their opponents at the table is called collusion. Though it may seem that nowadays the poker house, casinos and other serious gambling establishments will not allow making even a small hint at collusion between players, some people are still trying to give the sack to the rest of the poker world. Such occasions as collusion for winning are mostly widespread among the entry-level players with small poker experience, who are willing to try on everything possible and impossible just to get their share of poker cake. Well, we are not to judge here.
Collusion and Friendship
On the other hand it sometimes may seem that it would be rather fun to share the game in casino with your friend. Jokes at the table, talking to each other in the breaks, having chat, etc, seem quite alluring, though when you play with your friend at the same table at casino sometimes you may get into a scrape. First of all, one of you may set another one up and it is a quite common situation for anyone whose pockets are just one step length apart from being filled with a decent amount of cash. Yes, people are not perfect. Another drawback of making collusion with a friend is that actually you will not get more money than if you would have played there by your own. Think it over, both of you have only one possible beneficial end up in a game: when both of you will split the pot, even here, you will get only the half of it.
Collusion Online
Though collusion is not the right thing to do to become a professional and gain a poker-playing skill, there is a certain amount of people who are still trying to break the system, especially if considering the online generation of poker players. Using collusion as a form of online cheating is rather difficult first of all because all the databases are scanning all the visitors and all the registered players to control whether at least two of them are frequently playing in the same card room. Or in case you’ve decided to create another one account to play from both of them in one game, again, your ip address will betray you.
Do You Really Want to Do it in a Tasteless Manner?
Despite all the positive feature s a poker game may have and all the positive emotions and cash it may bring, every medal has its reverse and so as there will always be cheaters in poker. A said story for a professional player who had been developing his poker image and strategies for years, and a funny story for a cheater who prefers eating cake and have it at the same time. Despite the fact that it sounds nice and pleasant, we all know that it’s impossible to sit between two stools and not fall to the ground. Chew on that for a while before making a final decision to cheat, after all it is just a tasteless way to get money.
